The Walmart online pharmacy service is just one of many features of the retailing giant’s web site. The pharmacy component of the site is adequate but clearly isn’t the major focus of the business. Several other pharmacy sites offer a better alternative primarily because the pharmacy is the focus of their business and not just one of many parts.
New Prescriptions
The Walmart pharmacy doesn’t offer an online option for entering a new prescription request. You can, however, download a form and mail it, together with the written prescription, to Walmart pharmacy mail services. Prescriptions, can, of course, be taken directly to an in-store Walmart pharmacy.
Prescription Refills
The first step in ordering a refill of a prescription already registered at the Walmart pharmacy is to create a My Pharmacy account online. Some online pharmacies allow a parent to add children or even other household members to their account for refilling prescription. Walmart requires that each individual patient have an account. Once account registration is completed, all that’s needed to order a refill is to enter the prescription number, store number and the patient’s date of birth. Prescriptions can be picked up at a designated Walmart pharmacy location or shipped for home delivery. Standard delivery is by First-Class mail and is free of charge. Expedited delivery is available for an additional charge.
Prescription Transfers
Transferring an existing prescription from another pharmacy is accomplished by logging onto the Walmart My Pharmacy account and entering the name and phone number of the pharmacy, the prescriber’s name and phone number and the name and dosage of the drug. The Walmart Pharmacy will then contact that pharmacy to make the transfer.
Walmart offers an extensive range of non-prescription medical and health products. Over-the-counter medications include ones for allergies, aches and pains, fever, digestive problems and others. There’s a wide selection of first aid products and remedies for skin, foot, eye and ear issues. An extensive selection of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements is also available.
Walmart offers home medical equipment including bed and bath safety aids, health monitors, humidifiers and air cleaners, diabetic supplies, braces and supports and mobility products. You can also find equipment for exercise, fitness and massage therapy.
Walmart pharmacy’s health education features are pretty basic when compared to the best of the online pharmacy sites. There is a Health & Wellness Center which provides articles for healthy living and for more specific concerns such as allergies, coughs, colds & flu, diabetes, diet & exercise, emotional health, heart health, oral health and pain management. There are areas dedicated specially to health issues for women and men. The site also includes a few tools such as an allergy alert which give pollen counts for particular geographic areas, and calculators to help monitor calories burned and Body Mass Index.
Though limited in its capabilities compared to several other online pharmacy sites, Walmarts prescription order process is straightforward and easy to use. Automatic refills of prescription medications can be requested and you can get email reminders of when refills are due. The My Pharmacy account service offers a handy way of keeping track of prescriptions and offers the ability to print medical expense summaries.
The primary vehicle for customer support for Walmart’s online pharmacy is the My Pharmacy online account. Other customer service features, such as toll-free telephone and email address customer service generally and are not too likely to be able to address pharmacy concerns specifically. The most valuable customer service resource for Walmart pharmacy is you local Walmart pharmacist.
With fewer prescription options and less attention paid to health education than several other sites, Walmart’s online pharmacy service is adequate for most needs but not an outstanding option.
